Cooking Outside

We have started building bonfires in our yard in the evenings. It is lovely to sit outside, look out onto the lake, and strum the guitar. Most nights the lake glistens with light from hundreds lanterns. The fisherman use the light to attract lake flies, which in turn entice fish close to their nets.

The other night the gas ran out in the middle of cooking. We decided to transfer our pots and pans to the fire and dinner turned out great! Now, cooking dinner over the fire has become a small ritual, Friday we bought a whole chicken from the butchery (for about $2,50) and roasted it over the fire! It was delicious - especially with the roasted sweet potatoes and fresh pumpkin salad!

Working with TASO

Good News!

My research proposal about malaria prevalence in HIV positive pregnant women has just been approved by the TASO research team. I have been working with TASO, The AIDS Support Organization, for the past two months. TASO is the oldest and largest AIDS support organization in East Africa. I have been learning a tremendous amount at the center and out in the field, everything from triage to HIV testing. For the past few weeks I have been working on this research proposal. Despite preventative measures taken by TASO, malaria continues to be a tremendous burden on their patients. Malaria and HIV co-infection is particularly dangerous for pregnant women.

I will begin collecting data on Wednesday!!
